The mysterious deaths of the Korovina group on Mount Tritrans
Background to the Korovina Mystery
A group of seven hikers from Kazakhstan, led by professional climber Lyudmila Korovina, headed to the Hamar-Daban mountain range in the Republic of Buryatia in Russia. They started their 70-80 kilometers (44-50 miles) hike on August 2, 1993. Unfortunately for the group, the weather was poor, with freezing rain and snow. Nevertheless, the group continued on their route relatively safely until August 5 and were on the slopes of Mount Tritrans, with a peak of 2311 metres (7582 ft).
However, only one participant of that fateful expedition remained alive after that day. The case has been referred to as the “Second Dyatlov Pass incident” after the mysterious deaths of some students in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1959.
