Cullen Finnerty, 30, was a quarterback who played at Grand Valley State University, won three NCAA Division II football championships, and had more than 50 wins with them.
On May 26, 2013, he went on a fishing trip, but later that evening, in a panic, he called the family to scream that he was being chased by something or someone. He was never heard from again. Two days later, Cullen’s body was discovered. His body had no signs of trauma, and he was dressed for the elements.
The autopsy report said it's likely Finnerty had anxiety, disorientation, and paranoia from being alone in the woods while waiting for in-laws to pick him up.
Was this a case of Oxycodone toxicity and CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) caused by his football career or something more sinister in the Michigan Wilderness? Further brain analysis by Boston University showed that his CTE was unlikely to have contributed to his death.
Why was Cullen so frightened that he abandoned his boat and fled to the woods? Was it as clear-cut a case as the local Sheriff and coroner believed? The story has several puzzling elements.
